Acupuncture is a system of healing that was developed over 2500 years
ago as part of the traditional medicine of China, Japan and other
Eastern countries.
The practice of acupuncture began with the discovery that stimulation of
specific areas on the skin affects the functioning of certain organs of
the body. The current practices have evolved into a system of medicine
that restores and maintains health by the insertion of fine needles into
points (called acupuncture points or acupoints) just below the surface
of the skin. These points are in very specific locations and lie on
special channels of energy that are called meridians.
Usually between 2 and 10 needles are left in the clients body for
approximately 20 minutes while resting. The thought of the needles can
be challenging for some people but in fact the needles used are very
fine and discomfort is very brief and usually limited to a slight
pricking sensation.
Acupuncture is being increasingly understood in Western scientific terms and validated by clinical trials. Its effectiveness is accepted by the World Health Organisation and recognized in many countries including New Zealand.
Other traditional techniques may be used to complement your treatment, as described next.
Tui-na massage involves a variety of techniques and
manipulations, which use the therapist's hands and elbows to stimulate
acupuncture points and channels and bring about a more harmonious flow of qi and
healing in the body. It is performed through clothing.
During cupping, suction cups are placed over points or muscles to invigorate the tissues and promote healing.
During moxibustion the herb Artemesia is heated and held just above the surface of the skin to gently warm acupuncture points.
At your request, dietary advice may be given according to the elements of your body and the energetic properties of food to support your healing process and optimize your performance.
To enhance and integrate your treatment, exercise plans may also be offered according to your personal needs and wishes.
