Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
MBSR
was developed in the Division of Preventive and Behavioral Medicine at the
University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979 by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn and his
associates. It has served as a model for more than 200 similar programmes
in the USA and world-wide.
Over two decades of published research indicates that the practice of MBSR
has been linked to:
- an ability to manage both short- and long-term stressful situations more
efficiently
- lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms
- an increased ability to relax
- reduction in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that
may not go away
- greater energy and enthusiasm for life
- improved self-esteem
Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening
in the present moment without judging or criticizing yourself, others or your
experience.
MBSR is available in three formats:
- as standalone one on one six weekly sessions
- in combination with your Acupuncture/TCM treatments
- as eight weekly group programmes
The highly participatory, practical sessions/ programmes include:
- guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
- gentle stretching and mindful Yoga
- inquiry exercises to enhance awareness in everyday life
- individually tailored coaching
- group dialogue (during eight weekly programmes)
- reading material and practice aids to support your home practice
